The dialogue, which is one of the leading discussions in health policy regarding public health issues affecting cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and prevention, is a partnership between Cancer and Blood Cancer Research Foundation, the American Association of Mesothelioma and Lymphoma, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons on the Prevention of Mesothelioma, and the American Cancer Society. For the first session, held in the summer of 2000, researchers at the John E. Fitzgerald Cancer Center discussed the relationship between mesothelioma incidence and the proportion of women in the country who use mammography screening. We learned that the number of new cases of lung cancer is expected to double in the next 20 years—the same as colon and rectal cancers combined. We are in the midst of a national epidemic of mesothelioma, the second most common cause of all malignancies. If you were to guess the number of cases of mesothelioma in the United States, you would probably be right. But because of the current low incidence and high mortality, we simply cannot afford to ignore what are now some of the more serious malignancies in our society. When Dr. Boyd and I were the directors of the Division of Colorectal Cancer in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we made a concerted effort to increase the number of colorectal biopsies to diagnose mesothelioma using histologically defined lesions in which tumors were suspected. We were trying to find an effective method to reduce the mortality rate of mesothelioma among the elderly, and we were interested in the relationship between screening for mesothelioma and other cancers. We were also trying to identify the risk factors involved in both the high incidence and high incidence/death of mesothelioma, and we were motivated to discover new treatments. During the course of our research, we began to focus less on finding effective strategies and more on finding ways to improve the overall cancer screening program of the United States and Canada. At the same time, we started a campaign to make mesothelioma and other cancers known to the public, and that effort was expanded and expanded again over the next three years to include many scientists at various centers. We learned that there were very few people in the United States who had been exposed to mesothelioma.
