Tail amputation is not performed on healthy and well-nourished cats. Tail amputation is not performed on cats in shock or coma. Tail amputation does not occur in the presence of any infectious disease. The use of the tourniquet/snake skin technique to sever tissues is discouraged. Tail amputation of cats is performed with a minimum of pain control, except dogs and cats which may have significant pain associated with tail amputation. The tourniquet technique may be modified to permit more efficient collection of tail sample. A cat may be killed if it is no longer suitable for obtaining tail. If it is dead, the tourniquet method is used to prevent the destruction of any residual tail material. Tail tissue is placed in the freezer of the IACUC laboratory. Tail tissue is shipped to the Genotypic Animal Genetics Laboratory (GAGE) in New Orleans, Louisiana for genetic analysis. To the best of our knowledge, no one has requested a tail sample as a donor, with the expectation that the animal will be used for research in the future. Tail tissue specimens are provided only after the following criteria are met: The specimen is intact and free of foreign remains which may interfere with the preservation process; There are no obvious anatomical anomalies (including the presence of internal organs); Tail tissue is collected from a normal (uncomfortable to the tail) size male mouse in its euthanized state. Tail Collecting Procedure Tail collection is performed using a snake or tourniquet-based technique, when possible. A normal, well-nourished cat is chosen for collection. The tail is extended at least 20 mm above the base of the body. Tail is held under the tongue, but not grasped as in the 'snake snare' (See Figure 2). If the mouse is in shock or coma it should not be subjected to direct pressure of the tourniquet. For the collection procedure described below, the tail is carefully lifted and placed in a plastic sack. After extraction, the tail is washed thoroughly with warm saline.
