We were able to test only two squirrels of 2 to 6months of age, so the results are preliminary. Furthermore, we were able to determine to near 90% accuracy the location or absence of buried nuts. The gray squirrel (Sciurus cqrolinensis) is an animal whose ecological niche is a woodland habitat with a tree canopy. In addition to being a popular animal food a gray squirrel is a common nuisance to farmers. A study was carried out to examine the effect of artificial light at different levels on the light sensitivity of Sciurus cqrolinensis at the time of caching. The effect was investigated on the dark, bright, day and shade conditions. The results show that during the dark periods (3am-8pm), the brightness of artificial light reduced the amount of light reaching the ground, thus decreasing the sensitivity of Sciurus cqroliniceps. During this period artificial light also interfered with the sleep patterns of the squirrels and the animal was more likely to wake up in the afternoon. Light sensitivity increases during the day but reduces during the night. The light levels of the squirrels were also affected by the amount of light hitting the ground. In addition to reducing the sensitivity of the squirrels to light exposure, artificial light also increased the feeding of the squirrels. Thus, it seems that gray squirrels are able to adjust their sensitivity to artificial light to compensate for the effects of reduced light on the availability of nuts available in their natural environment, which is a woodland forest.
