Overview of the OASIS Research Collaboration Program in Clinical Practice The OASIS is an integrated health care system comprised of clinical and community/outpatient services for adults with behavioral health problems. The system is coordinated by an experienced and highly competent team of physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals. In addition to its clinical services, the OASIS offers a wide range of culturally responsive community and inpatient services to meet the needs of a diverse consumer base. The OASIS program was created through a cooperative effort between medical, psychiatric, nursing, educational, and community clinical services at all levels of the health care system. A comprehensive health care system organization is necessary for effective delivery of care and optimal outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of individuals utilizing the OASIS services between May 2000 and February 2005. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients requesting OASIS services. Patients requesting the services were defined as those who had attempted to obtain care, but had not followed through or remained in the waiting list. A self-report interview was conducted with all patients with any known OASIS contact. For patients who underwent a medical evaluation prior to contacting the health services staff or were known to have an OASIS contact, a full physical and health history evaluation was used as well as a complete clinical interview was conducted. Outcome Measures All information was obtained by the physician-patient interview. The physical and health history was categorized as benign or malignant depending on the age group of the patient and the results of the clinical interview were considered abnormal as the findings were consistent with patients with conditions associated with schizophrenia. Psychiatric evaluation was conducted on each patient for substance abuse and other DSM-IV personality disorders as well as other mental illness diagnoses and history of treatment with psychotropic medications, physical medications, and electroconvulsive therapy. The patient's medical history was reviewed to determine if they had been evaluated for an Axis I condition or Axis II condition during the past year.
