Harrison said the Phonation is the biggest event he has taken part in 26 years with the Children's Miracle Network. The annual Phonation raises money, awareness and funds for the Children's Miracle Network. The Phonation began with the help of UT alumni, including Bob House, who wrote a book about his experience at the Children's Miracle Network about his experiences in 1968, a year ahead of the founding of the Children's Miracle Network. House's book, “Unlimited Hope,” chronicles an eight-month service mission he and other former Children's Miracle Network staff members participated in at an unnamed U.S. Children's Hospital. On one memorable night House and another former staff member, Michael Versa, were awakened by a patient crying out. “The doctor comes in and says, 'I'm not sure if I'm in the right position to do anything. I don't know the patient,' Versa recalls telling House. “And that's when we left.” The next morning the couple drove back to their hotel and drove an hour and a half to get to the Children's Miracle Network headquarters in Nashville, Tenn. On their way up Versa noticed a large crowd of people cheering. “We were driving over, and I was amazed to see a large group of cheering people,” Versa said. “I was trying to figure out where they came from. They were all wearing Children's Hospital uniforms.” Versa and House were among the first 40 donors who signed what was essentially an agreement with the Children's Miracle Network to participate in the Phonation if they could not serve at the Children's Miracle Network headquarters. Versa said the Phonation is a unique event that serves as “an informal way to make people feel important.” The Phonation also provides a rare opportunity for people to get together with other donors and staff members who are part of the Children's Miracle Network and share stories about that organization. “Everyone shares their story that day to the other Phonation participants or people who attend the event,” Harrison said. “It's a chance to get to know more about where we come from as a community. We all work for the same organizations, so there's a camaraderie that keeps it going.
