The agency's mission is to protect and conserve the wildlife, plants, and wild places of the Mississippi Basin through public protection, science-based management, and education and information. The complex has more than 200 million acres of lands, which covers about 75 percent of the area of Mississippi. The most populated county of North Mississippi contains about 60 percent of the country's population and approximately 55 percent of the Mississippi's timberland. These counties together with the adjacent counties of Crenshaw, Calhoun, and Prentice control about half of the world's timberland. To provide access to the area, the complex also serves five national forests on the north Mississippi coast, and in the south, the southernmost National forest, the Toussaint-Toombs National Forest, connects to the northern Mississippi forest. The complex is known for its abundant wildlife with large concentrations of white-tailed deer, turkeys, ducks, and song birds. This site is closed to all visitors. This website is maintained by the Mississippi Wildlife Conservation, Recreation, and Education Trust, Inc. (MICE). The MICE is a non-profit corporation that manages and maintains the North Mississippi Refuges Complex. The complex consists of about 200 million acres of land and contains many cultural sites as well as public lands. In the 1950s, the MICE created the North Mississippi Refuges Complex as the first project in a series of conservation projects designed to increase the population, diversity, and abundance of wildlife, plants, and wild areas in the Mississippi Basin. The complex has been designed so that it is accessible by four state highways. Visitors can enjoy the North Mississippi Refuges Complex using the highways from the north. These highways are: U.S. Highway 81 — East of the Complex, approximately 8 miles on the right. US Highway 90 — East of north entrance. US Highway 10 — West of west entrance. Furthermore, us Highway 31 — At the north entrance. The four state highways also lead into the MICE Headquarters and offices and their facilities. The Complex will have a variety of visitor facilities including an information desk, interpretive center, a recreation area for swimming, fishing, canoeing, and canoe-back-packing, a wildlife center, restrooms and drinking fountains, administrative offices, and some wildlife viewing areas.
