S.- Lyceum. Last week I had the pleasure of having Colonel Crater- Holman in my class. He is a well-educated man and a good teacher. After the lectures I also had the pleasure of having Dr. Heffner-Beraneche-Siegel in my class. He is a fine scholar and a good and popular professor. A new class is being formed in our university, called the Academy of Higher Education. We are now in the process of selecting men for the course, which is to be taken on the fifth Wednesday evening in the month of November. I have the good fortune to be present at one of the meetings and the lectures are becoming in- credible to me, and I may even say impossible. I can hardly keep the classes from getting into disquisition. It has been the custom at the College of St. Simon to read a chapter or an extract from a book, with which the pupils in their class had been in- versed, and I think they have the right idea. I am glad to know this, but I think it is an idea not much in keeping with how the world is now organized. There are many who think that they are entitled to read a chapter or an extract from some great novelist or poet, for, being familiar with the author s life, the course of his life, and his manner of life, you get some idea for the nature of your subject. I cannot agree with this, and, indeed, I feel that some of the greatest masters of history, though they have all been famous, had not the privilege of being in- formed by those who were familiar with their lives. A great man, for example, does not lose his dignity through being in another s house without being able to be familiar with the man s life, nor does he in- internationalize his style of life by reading of the same subjects under one title. On Monday night I spent a pleasant evening at home. This was not without the usual trouble about my studies, for I have not been able to get hold of the time which has been given me by the college. I have had the opportunity of examining several of the works of Dr. Hefner, as they are now printed abroad, and have found them all very agreeable. I am reading a German translation of a poem by Dr. Hefner to you, and I shall read it to you at dinner on Wednesday.
