While the vast majority of old loans in museums are simply left untouched as part of the old loan collection, new collections have begun to appear in museum collections as museums continue to search for ways to cope with a growing number of unclaimed loans. While there are many reasons for an old loan to disappear, I have concluded that one of the main reasons old loans are disappearing is because the process of recovering unclaimed loans from libraries across the country has been poorly conceived and poorly implemented. I believe one solution to this problem is to better prepare institutions to deal with lost old loans. The main difficulty to recovering unclaimed loans has been the lack of sufficient information about the old loans being sought. A new study carried out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by DRS. John P. Boeing and Joseph R. O'Neill of the Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. James A. Hines of the Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences, has revealed the difficulty in recovering old loans that is causing a dramatic increase in the number of unclaimed loans. Their research into old loans in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, completed in January 1995, documents over 200,000 loans in over 100 museums. Much of their research was done before the current wave of unclaimed loans began to appear. Unfortunately, a majority of their research was done before all the information from the early 1990s about the problems with recovering old loans was available. Much of the information they had available was gleaned from museum staff and archives, and much of the missing information was only discovered after the current wave of unclaimed loans came along. The result is that the problems they found in researching old loans is an underestimate of what is occurring today. The reason I believe collectors have not only been failing to recover unclaimed loans but have been actively causing these loans to disappear is their failure to work effectively and efficiently as part of a community-based organization dedicated to solving museum problems of old loans. My research indicates that collectors are failing to realize the true scope of the problem that they are contributing to by engaging in bad practices in seeking out and recovering loaned objects. Because of their reluctance to accept the responsibility of working closely with local libraries and museums to recover unclaimed old loans, collectors have not only failed to protect unclaimed loans from destruction by collecting them on their own, they have also created new and continuing problems.
