John P. Boeing and Joseph R. O'Neill of the Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. James A. Hines of the Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences, has revealed the difficulty in recovering old loans that is causing a dramatic increase in the number of unclaimed loans. Their research into old loans in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, completed in January 1995, documents over 200,000 loans in over 100 museums. Much of their research was done before the current wave of unclaimed loans began to appear. Because of their reluctance to accept the responsibility of working closely with local libraries and museums to recover unclaimed old loans, collectors have not only failed to protect unclaimed loans from destruction by collecting them on their own, they have also created new and continuing problems.
