A University award may be made to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the improvement of the quality of life of students and the community at large in one or more of the following areas: the study of the nature of human diversity and human creativity; the study of health; the study of the arts; the study of the environment or agriculture; international studies or human rights and liberties. Recommendations made by the Board of Regents of the University of Maryland as to individuals to be considered for awards are final. A number of specific guidelines have been established to assist the selection committee when making their selection. These guidelines apply to both undergraduate and graduate student applicants to the George Washington University Program. The guidelines are developed jointly by the Graduate Division and the General Education Division within the Graduate School, both of which are independent of the GW Program. The Committee will consider applications only from those individuals whose excellence warrants consideration. In no case will more than three students be recommended to the Committee in any year. Only those applicants whose recommendation is mutually acceptable and who meet the academic standards specified for the George Washington Award will be considered for an award. Recommendations are offered by all members of the GW Graduate Division of Graduate Advisers, and by the President of the University in his or her capacity as the Graduate from Dean, or in cases of emergency from an acting or elected President or from the Dean of the Faculty in whose division the applicant is applying. Recommendations may be made by the Committee, or recommended a member of the Committee. They are not binding on the Committee. A letter of recommendation by one or more individuals is required to be submitted in support of the application. The letter should contain a statement of the applicant's scholarship and accomplishments, and describe, in general terms, the applicant's interest, aptitude and capacity in carrying out a particular graduate program, with particular reference to the goals and objectives of the University to which he or she should be devoted. Recommendations should be accompanied by transcripts, letters of recommendation, and official faculty evaluations. Selection Committees will not accept letters received as email attachments.
