P.E. unit provides a unique learning environment designed to promote success in professional teaching and is designed especially to prepare an individual for advanced study and future practice. This two-year program offers an overall academic curriculum for both college and graduate school credit. The program has an excellent faculty and staff for a highly personalized program. The coursework is primarily based upon teaching and research practices in the field of education. The goals of the Department of Education are to: a) create and preserve a quality educator workforce so that our community has a well-trained professional school teacher and a well-trained and prepared teacher workforce for schools, b) educate our teachers, and provide them with the resources necessary for success in all classroom conditions, including the learning challenges of special education; c) develop a knowledge base for teaching, emphasizing both critical thinking and professional development, and d) create learning opportunities throughout the curriculum. The Professional Education Unit at Governors State University is the only public college located in the State of New York that offers a two-year program that addresses this educational goal. Professional Education Unit's students gain important knowledge and skills through hands-on, college-preparatory courses, classroom instruction, and a variety of research experiences. Students earn an Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Master of Education Degree depending on their graduation requirements. Students also gain significant professional experience as teaching faculty and graduate students and serve throughout the education system with professional educators. This program has a strong emphasis on professional learning, the development of critical thinking and the preparation of a well-educated workforce. Students are able to gain these skills by engaging both nationally and locally based resources.
