Davis is the new dean of the IU Department of Linguistics. He succeeds William S. Davis, who will resign. Davis has extensive experience teaching the languages of Central and Eastern Europe. He teaches courses in the first year of language training at Krasnoyarsk State University, Russia. He has served as adjunct professor at Harvard University for ten years, where he has directed the department's Institute for the Study of Languages. As part of his teaching duties, Davis has directed an MA program at Harvard in Russian, taught courses in the department of linguistics, and taught in the Program in Russian for International Communication and Research at Harvard University. In addition to his teaching duties, Davis was a member of the Committee for Russian Research and is currently advising a project for the Center for Linguistic Studies. He is a member of the Departmental Committee for Languages, Linguistics and Literature. He has had a long career as a translator, author, and public speaker. In addition, he has written scholarly articles, books, and chapters, including four books in English on language and culture and a few more in Russian. He is a member of several committees and publications, including the International Committee on Russian. He is an awardee of the Association for Linguistics' Research Prize (1992), Linguistic Association of America's Linguistic Awards in Linguistics (1987), and The Institute of Slavic Studies' Annual Scientific and Historical Conference (1987). Furthermore, he is also a member of the Linguistic Society of America, and of various editorial boards and advisory groups. With a degree from Harvard, Davis is well-known in the linguistic community and has achieved prominence because of his work in the field. He is now entering a new phase of his career in which he is seeking to direct programs for graduate students. In addition, he has served on staffs at the Institute for the Study of Languages at Harvard University, the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and at the Center for Linguistic Studies at Harvard University. He is a member of the Language and Culture Section of the American Dialect Society and of various editorial boards and research groups within that society. At Krasnoyarsk State University, Davis has directed the Institute for the Study of Languages, which conducts advanced languages programs and grants funding for graduate study in the field. Davis serves as the director of the Language Laboratory, with a principal responsibility for research and teaching in the area of linguistic anthropology, including the program of specialization of languages.
