She served three one-year terms as Director of the PPC, from June 2010 to May 2017. Prior to this, she was an Adjunct Faculty member, from 2007 to 2011 and from 2008 to 2010. She has worked for the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the University of Pennsylvania. She has published four books, in 2008 and 2009 respectively: The Psychology of Desire: Sexuality and Desire in Religious and Cultural Contexts (Routledge); and Moral Psychology (Routledge). Dr. Kitchen received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1982), and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from the University of Illinois—Chicago. She taught there from 1989 to 2001, during which he supervised graduate students, supervised undergraduate research fellows, conducted a research lab, and was Director of the Program in Psychology and Religious Studies. She has been a Visiting Fellow for a wide variety of institutions and universities (including the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow). The Graduate Certificate in Psychology at NC State also trained her in the history of religion. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and has been President of the Division on Religion, Spirituality, and Health of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences of the Division of Psychology at NC State. She is a member of the Institute for Religious and Spiritual Studies at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. Kitchens earned her doctorate from Yale University (1985) and her bachelor degree from the University of Pittsburgh (1976). She worked in the psychology departments of many colleges and universities, including New York University, Yale, Princeton, Columbia University, Boston University, Cornell, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Tennessee. She was a Research Assistant at the Institute on Religion, Spirituality and Health of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences of the National Research Council, a staff research assistant at the Institute for Religious and Spiritual Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has served as a visiting fellow at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow. Dr. Kitchens has a wide variety of interests, including the study of religion, psychology of religion, and cognitive psychology. She believes that both the social and cognitive sciences are very important in helping people understand the human experience.
