Competitive powerlifting (CPL) is a training method whereby one trains in a very controlled manner (more of a “stoked” style of competition) with a small goal size and high frequency of training, which allows for the development of specific and repeatable strength and muscle mass gains at all levels. We consider CPL a high-intensity training system, or an attempt at building a more intense style of training. It is not a system of “power”, and does not require the use of a powerlifting platform. A more appropriate term for the type of training that is involved in CPL is “power lifting”.
Competitive powerlifting utilizes a number of different training methods that can result in either rapid increases in strength (strength per week of training in most cases) or increased training-specific hypertrophy. The methods involved include:
Speed & Strength
Speed work is essentially an extended effort workout. In most cases, it involves doing one or more of the “stoked” methods with a “speed bench” or a “speed chin-up”. As one gains experience with the various squatting, benching, chin-ups and snatch movements, the speed work is gradually replaced or done in phases of one or two speed workouts each session. With the progression of speed training, the speed work is gradually replaced and the main work of the training cycle is done to get a good pump and some endurance work going.
Speed training can be done at various times of the day for different purposes, however, we generally recommend doing it as a warm-up period for a training session, such as before a squat session or before a max effort squat or deadlift. This can be done for about 10-20 minutes, but is still enough time for getting adequate work done, so the training session can still be done in a reasonable amount of time.
Strength
The term “strength” can be used loosely here. Speed/Strength or “power” is the most commonly used term, when referring to strength training.
