Veteran status is determined based on one of the following reasons: Military service is a continuous obligation (i.e., one's service has ended). Military service was part of a continuous armed conflict or a protracted armed conflict, or was a war for which the United States armed forces were actively engaged. Service in a non-United States armed force (e.g., as an officer or member of an organized foreign militia). Service in a non-United States organized foreign militia. Service in a peacetime or national emergency declared by the President of the United States. Service overseas, including service in or after the Korean War, the Vietnam War or the invasion of Iraq. Service on a military or naval vessel. Service as a full-Time National Guard or Reserve, a part-Time National Guard or Reserve or as a member of a reserve component during any active or reserve state of national service. Service, service as a member of an overseas civil defense unit as defined at the time of that service by federal law, or in any capacity other than that of a full-Time National Guard or Reserve. Service as a member of the Reserves for any length of time, except when the member's regular duty or full-time duty is in support of the active-duty forces of the United States; or for which the member has been authorized to be absent from the State on duty under such section; or the member's regular duty or full-time duty is the same as that which is ordered as an emergency relief duty (and is exempt from this classification). Note: If you are a member on full-time duty, you will be entitled to claim veteran status even if you serve in a non-service organized militia or a non-service civil defense unit. If you are a full-time member in a peacetime status, you will automatically be entitled to claim veteran status. If you are not a reservist, you may be entitled to qualify for veteran status for any military service that was within the previous seven years and that is considered part of the regular, ongoing military mission. If you meet the above criteria, you are entitled to veteran status upon completion of your service. However, if you do not meet the above criteria, you are not entitled to veteran status, even if you are later eligible for such status.
