The first time I ever heard 40th Street was from Penn grad- ed Came Campbell walking home from work. That morning she was walking with her dog around 40th and was stopped by the police. “I just love the new police station.” she told me afterwards. “It's amazing. I'm sure it will have a ripple effect on the area.” That was the first time I'd heard anyone call it a “police station” other than a police station in Philadelphia. And in truth, the old building didn't really have a police section- it was used a lot for people in the psychiatric units. It was also the site of a lot of violence. There were a lot of shootings here, and it wasn't very comforting. But since I've lived here, I've also learned to keep a low profile: if I'm going to go inside, I prefer to go into the building and stand-off to the side of the building, so no one can come up there and see me. I always say, “I do no business here, please don't call the police,” or something like that. Then I just leave. I don't have to explain to my friends, “I'm with the police.” I know a person walking around 40th Street is looking for me. It will be nice to say, “I'm not in the building.” And even if I am, I've got an excellent telephone on which I can get a person in immediately. There's a lot that could be done around the building — I just don't see why it's necessary. People always talk about “the plaza”, and I wonder who the plaza is. It looks to me that the Penn Police building could probably hold a lot more people without taking away from the plaza or the surrounding area. The plaza is full and has been for quite a while, but now it's getting crowded. On a daily basis I have to walk around with all my stuff, get to the Post Office and then walk along the street. I think it's a good idea to create a plaza. This is going to be the place to relax and socialize.
