This pattern was apparent in the 1960s and continued in much of New England until the early 1990s. One of the major problems with the New England “white ethnic politics” theory is that the “white ethnic” label is not well known locally,  whereby the results of this paper were largely the product of largely nonrepresentative “White E.U. Residents”. Moreover, this group is not necessarily White, but may include Jews and other non-White ethnic groups. For some studies, I examined the influence of the name of one New England city in order to examine the effects of name at-large selection, and the pattern was not significantly different from its usual status. The effect was largest among the non New England cities, most of whom did not have at-large selection. These results lend support to the “Boston effect”, but are less conclusive for all other cities. The effects should be interpreted cautiously and more studies are required on the issue. (Emphasis added). Here we use name at-large selection as a proxy to define the political power of urban areas in the past and present. We note that we do not necessarily need the urban area to be a large city to have an effect on a statistical test like this, that is, an effect at the 0.05 level or less. However, this measure gives a more precise measure of the influence of a city, and can be used as the basis for comparing cities in contrast to looking at city size or population.
