In this tutorial, I will be looking at how to do a titration of a pure CO2 solution and how to compare a result to other methods to arrive at the desired answer. Part 1: Titration of CO2 Titration of CO2 Solution As a first step, I like to measure the amount of a solution of the reaction mixture so that I have a reference for what to expect. The quantity of CO2 to titrate is measured in moles. Once you have the amount of solution of the reaction mixture measured then you can simply divide the quantity of solution into the number of moles. The solution I am titrating is an alkaline Na 2 SO 4 solution. You need to measure the alkalinity of the solution using a refractometer. To make the titration solution, dissolve about 10 grams of C02 (5.0 MOL/l) into about 1 liter of water. This needs to stay about at room temperature at the very least. The amount of C02 to titrate will depend on the pH of the solution and the amount of carbon dioxide in the solution. I then added about 10 grams of the titration solution to the solution of the desired CO2 concentration. This needs to be at least as concentrated as the solution of C02, and then it needs to be filtered from the solution using a filter paper. The filter paper should make sure the particulate matter is removed. After that, I placed everything in a beaker and started shaking it at a high (70) temperature for about 3 hours (the exact duration will depend on the pH of your solution and the amount of C02 that has been added to it) I then separated the solution and placed it into an oven to make sure that the CO2 dissolved completely. If you look at the solution after the CO2 has been titrated, it should look like a clear solution.
