Now, we could find out, man, Kane we'd love. You had the art, you had the cool, we'd love the style. Let's see, we'll make a special edition of Sampling for the guy who was all about the Sampling. We'll make a DVD, man, but look, you should have put in a lot more in. No, no. Look, we'll make him an original cover, you don't know how much we love the style. Let, just you know we love it. So. Now that we're done getting into production let's get to work. We're putting to use all our artistic talents to work on Sampling: the first release will be a limited edition of 1,000 copies. We'd like to offer each copy to a lucky fan; if only we had been able to do this for you. A great story, but a bit short: “The first of a series of “Hands On with Kane, the book that brought the artist to the nation's capital,” is due to come out in early 2010. At this point, it's just a teaser, but I had a chance to talk to Kane, who kindly sent along one of the first pictures from the book. There has been a lot of media hype about how the book will change the face of popular culture. Will it be able to keep its focus away from Kane? I asked Kane about his influences, “A lot of the things people say are not true. But they all kind of feed into the same themes. The one thing I will say is like the most important influence for me as an artist is [David] Hockney. It's kind of weird when people say that's what inspired me to do something. I'm not really inspired by Hockney. I actually don't think about him as much as I like [his contemporary] Damien First. Maybe it comes from both those influences at times, but more I think it's a natural progression of a person who was always interested in how things are built. It's not about the idea being a product of these people's ideas. It's more about, 'What's the material? What's the system?' And then you can make things out of that.” It's the first time that an artist since the mid-80s has given an interview to a mainstream publication, to show the world that he isn't a recluse, a self-imposed media exile.
