However, location-dependent computing devices are costly, complicated and limited in their practical application as they cannot support access to geographically varied resources. The purpose and design of location-dependent applications is therefore, in many ways, a challenge related to the design of the overall information system. This paper develops a novel framework for designing information systems that is based on the concepts of locality and the notion of a “location service”. Locality refers to the fact that information that is relevant to a particular location is accessible to a local unit from any other location simultaneously. To address this, the framework of location-dependent systems proposes the notion of service, which is designed to respond to the problem of providing access to a geographic location that is geographically varied in its resources. This allows the local location to be utilized or integrated as a resource that is available at a fixed time in time, providing an attractive solution for a number of challenges related to the design, implementation and use of location-dependent information systems.
