Introduction 2.1 Overview 2.2 Data Acquisition 2.2 Real Time Processing 2.5 Information Integration 2.6 Analysis and Verification 2.8 Control of the project 2.9 Evaluation 3. Conclusions Structural Health Monitoring Systems, isaXeS-based surveillance systems, are at the origin of safety, environmental and energy management programs in urban areas. The use of these systems provides information on the condition of road structures, buildings, etc., to be subsequently presented to the project team for improvement purposes (Ainsworth&Ritchie, 2006). Data is acquired by sensors attached, for example, to trees, streetlights or traffic signals; an automated system of control is needed to interpret the data to establish their structural health (Harley, 2005; Sorenson, 1997). In many cases, the structural quality of a public road structure is measured, using, for example, the “elevation”, “flow”, “pavement” and the “surfacing” of a roadway with instruments used to record the changes in the roadway that are caused by traffic, pedestrians and various other agents (Osterwesche, 1998). Moreover, other instruments (such as the “depth in potholes” or “surface defects”) may be utilized as well because, although the instruments can detect the presence of cracks in road surfaces such as the surface of roadways, they can also detect, at least in the case of pavement, any imperfections, such as the presence of surface stones. Additionally, these instruments can alert the team to the damage that they might find during the inspection, to confirm the presence of surface defects. It has been shown (Ainsworth&Ritchie, 2006) that this instrumentation system, in real time, can assist in the analysis and control of a project, allowing the assessment of the condition of road structures, which could include the prevention of damage to the infrastructure in the future, as a result of the design changes that may be in process. 2. Structural Health Monitoring Systems (Sums) 2.1 Overview In addition to their applications for structural analysis, several Sums are being developed. Sums are typically used as an instrument that can detect the presence of surface cracks, as long as the cracks are not completely filled, are covered, or are under the influence of other materials.
