Clinical Use of Animal TSH and Thyroid Metabolites by John E. Schildrath (DPH) and Dr. Charles A. Lipped, DVM. (Department of Family Medicine, University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix, Arizona 85004) The results of several well controlled studies in a variety of animal species confirmed that canine TSH and T3 are immunologic markers that can be detected in serum by a valid method. Furthermore, TSH and thyroid stimulating hormone, both of which are involved in thyroid function maintenance in dogs, are not a valid substitute for laboratory test evaluation of clinical hypothyroidism in dogs. Studies of the ability of TSH and T3 to respond to various diagnostic tests, including thyroids and thyrotropin, are not conclusive and should be viewed with caution due to limitations of their design. Dog TSH and a few animal studies of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) are used by clinicians to assess TSH and, to some extent, T3 levels in response to various diagnostic tests. In particular, the clinical usefulness of canine TSH is questionable, especially in humans due to the variability between laboratories and by a large and T3 results. In addition, dog TSH assay kits are not sufficiently sensitive to differentiate between thyroid and hyperthyroid states in dogs. TSH is a strong anti-thyroid hormone. In addition, T3 is an anti-thyroid hormone. Thus, an animal's TSH can be used by veterinarians to evaluate T3 status in dogs. However, this study has highlighted that, even dog TSH and T3 levels are only a weak indicator of the actual underlying thyroid status. The purpose of this chapter is to review all the current research studies of canine TSH and T3 that have been performed in vitro or in vivo and to recommend future studies in dogs. The article also discusses the interpretation of TSH and T3 results in humans and animals, the use of animal TSH and T3 in laboratory research, in animal food products, and as a screening aid in clinical diagnostic procedures. Animal TSH and Thyroid Metabolites. A number of studies have utilized canine TSH and T3 to evaluate T3 in a variety of animal species, including rabbits, rats, cat, and dogs. In the rabbits, the results of two studies and two in vitro studies were very negative.
