We combined both isotope and carbon isotope measurements on the arachnids and stomata of 18 ferns of various taxonomic levels to determine the carbon isotope signatures of plant species living in each of three ecosystems found in the tropical rainforest. We find higher levels of carbon isotope differentiation for the ferns living in the dry forest compared to the ferns in the humid forest. The wet forest plants have stable isotope signatures from their nitrogen and potassium isotopes and there is little discernible variation in the forest ferns, while the dry forest ferns and their potassium isotope levels show considerable variation. This study demonstrates a key role for plant ecology in determining the functional ecology of tropical rainforest ferns, and illustrates that functional ecology is not only an important determinant of biodiversity within fern communities, but also in species composition and population structure of tropical rainforest ferns.
