PERIODIC REVIEW FOR BIOSPHERE RESERVES (January 2002) The UNESCO General Conference, at its 28th session, adopted Resolution 28 C/2.4 on the Statutory Framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

The report must indicate the steps that have been taken in the preceding ten years for further elaboration of the area concerned, and the reasons why further progress is required. The report must also show that an appropriate management plan is in place. The secretariat of the UNESCO General Conference will submit this report to the Assembly no later than May 28, 2002. It will be addressed to the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the United Nations (UNAC ON), which is responsible for the coordination of UNESCO biosphere reserves and its programs through its office in Geneva. It will be accompanied by the latest management plan. The biosphere reserves that are currently qualified for listing as biosphere reserves, as indicated on the website of UNESCO, are: World Wildlife Fund's South Pole Biosphere Reserve; Great Barrier Reef Biosphere Reserve under the provisions of CITES; and UNESCO's Rio de Janeiro Biosphere Reserve. In addition, World Heritage sites listed by the World Heritage Committee on the basis of the principle of the integrity and integrity of the area are: Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramids of Palmyra, and the Roman Amphitheater; Mount Ararat, the ruins of Samothrace, Syrian, the ruins of Mycenae and Sparta, and the temples of Attic in Athens; the Roman Colosseum and Colosseum of Rome, the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, the theater of Carnival and the amphitheater of Verona; Palaces of Versailles and Buckingham Palace; the Palaeochristian mausoleum in Athens; the Colosseum of Pompeii and Herculaneum; and the Circus Maximus in Rome. For the purposes of listing these sites under the criteria of Article 4 of Resolution 28 C/2.4, there are four types of Biosphere Reserve. They are: Non-fauna, Non-insect Vulnerable Area; Fauna, Non-insect Critical Area; Critical Area, Non-fauna, Non-insect Vulnerable; and Vulnerable Area, Non-fauna, Non-insect Critical Area. The most important biospheres include: Coral Island, Australia; the Coral Atoll of Kiribati; the Coral Triangle of the Pacific; the Great Barrier Reef (Australia); the Gobi; and the Antarctic Islands.
