The information within these two years' censuses will help students gain a better understanding of Ireland, the Irish, and the Irish in the first century of the twentieth century. A great way to use this information is to have pupils ask each other questions concerning historical events in Ireland. The 1901 Census Information One way in which students will be able to study how the Irish in the first century of the twentieth century were organized is in looking at how the population was classified according to their sex and age. The 1901 Census was used to categorize people for the first time and many men, women, and children were classified as being in work, pensioners and inmates of institutions such as workhouses. In all, 1,923,847 persons were classified in the sex and age question during the first census, and the list of people classified in each sex and age category is provided alongside the 1901 census in this appendix. The 1911 Census Information For the purposes of the census, sex, age, and place of birth were combined into one question — 'Male or Female?', with the assumption that all people in the first census of 1911 were male. This year's classifications of people have been revised to take into account changes in the census definition of 'age', so that the figures for age have been corrected for people born after 1st April 1911. This allows the figure for the average age of people living in Ireland to be higher than it was in the 1911 Census, which was taken in 1901. The census also recorded the name of every person who lived and died during that year — an age, gender, and place of birth question. The 1911 Census classifies the age of people alive as 17, 18 and 19, and the place of birth is recorded as either the country of birth of the person or the place the person lived. The latter is sometimes used in an attempt by employers in the past to exclude men from jobs. The 1901 Census records the names of the persons living and died.
