But there was no stopping him from buying any, or any range of, oddities. By his early twenties Jim Drummond had amassed a collection of over 1200 items. A career collector, he had a range of unique items: unusual and rare items that would be at home in an art gallery, but wouldn't fit into some stores, or even a good house. And as well as the everyday stuff, he also had a huge range of things you just might not see again for a long, long time. He began selling to dealers and galleries, but would occasionally be visited by collectors himself who would visit his store, so they could have their items appraised. Some of those dealers would become regulars, some wouldn't. Some of those dealers and collectors made quite a few of their own rare items, which meant Jim Drummond was able to make the very best available to his customers, which is a huge plus and certainly a reason people continue to come back. Jim Drummond was an avid and avid collector. He would always have at least one or two items that he was very keen on and could not seem to find the time to put in a display for. In his younger days, in his twenties, this might have been a single item, but as he grew older it was a series of item. I would even buy books without even having any idea what books I wanted to own, as I would always know when I might want to buy them, just by listening to the radio. Jim Drummond also had a fascination with rare and unusual items, and even some “weirder” stuff. As collectors themselves (he and his father were often referred to as “old school”), they are the sort of people who will know not only everything there is about items, but they would have knowledge of more than just the stuff their item was in. Jim Drummond's early career began as a potter's apprentice from where he moved to the more high-end pottery business when it opened. He then worked in the potteries department of the Wellington Pottery Company (with Bill Weathering), then in the pottery department at Westpac in Christchurch, and then in the pottery department at Wellington's A & R Carlin-Williams, and finally in the department of pottery for Crown Castle in Queenstown. But it wasn't until he had been to a few auctions that he developed his love of the auction market.
