The antisense portion of the probe sequence serves to inhibit transcription of the targeted gene in a system composed of a vector containing the gene being regulated and the DNA from either one or two additional genes adjacent to the antisense gene segment. An antisense DNA probe (as defined above) is an appropriate gene targeting vector for the purposes of the present study.
