This report documents MDL water quality problems along T&D streams and the primary source streams in the Elk River Watershed. MDL problems exist along a wide range of water courses, from the primary source to tributaries to nonpoint source streams, and from near-primary source streams to watershed water quality. These problems are widespread, occurring primarily in spring and, to a lesser extent, in autumn to early winter. The MDL problem map (Figure 1) shows the total number of streams and the percentages of the sum of these sources on which MDL problems are present, and illustrates in detail the range in size of these sites. These sites are representative of the most severely affected areas of the Elk River Watershed, and the report provides an overview of their characteristics, locations, and trends. 2.0 An important purpose of this report is to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art database of primary source water quality problems at selected sites in the Elk River watershed. This database is intended to be a base for future state water use planning. The database includes streams across the watershed and multiple metrics of stream quality, including water temperature, chemical concentration, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS/total TDS), fecal coliforms, salinity, chloride, ammonia, and total suspended solids (TSS). Stream temperature represents the water temperature in the spring, summer, and fall and is used as a proxy for TDS. A stream's temperature is related to the amount of annual precipitation (i.e., temperature is higher in the winter months), river conditions in the early spring, and stream channel conditions in the early summer.
