The University of Regina Magazine Greening the planet Ten trees at a time Lightening strikes light up the sky over the University of Regina during a July 2012 summer storm passing through the Queen City. This past summer was unusually active for severe weather in Saskatchewan with the province recording as many tornadoes in July as the entire United States. The photo was taken by Greg Johnson, one of North America s top storm chasers and severe weather experts. (Photo: The University of Regina Magazine) “These storms are called convective, convection, tornadoes and hail a tornado is the same name in the United States, Canada and in Europe, and they occur most often during thunderstorms” said Johnson. “As the name suggests convection is usually associated with warm weather but when you look up you will see the wind at our location is colder that in the rest of the country because we are in the Arctic. When we have storms like these the whole town is covered in snow. The weather is normally very bad at the end of the season, but the snow is actually a good thing for us because it is melting and this adds to our energy.” Johnson and his family have been storm chasing since the late 1980s, but he says they haven't seen some of the storms that we have over the past year. “This past summer was unusually active for severe weather in Saskatchewan with the province recording as many tornadoes as the entire United States” Johnson said. The photo was taken by Greg Johnson, one of North America s top storm chasers and severe weather experts. (The University of Regina Magazine) The University of Regina published the first edition of The Unofficial University of Regina Travel Guide in 2011. Johnson said that the University has been around for more than 100 years, but there has only been one semester in the journal until now. Johnson says that the University doesn't do much to encourage storm chasers, but the town's response is encouraging. The University's meteorology department is a resource for storm chasers and the town is welcoming to them. “The town provides a lot of opportunities for storm chasers,” Johnson said. “People are willing to help, and they have actually helped storm chasers in the past, but I hope they won't have to be as helpful again in the future because the winds are pretty strong.” “People are willing to help.
