Questions and comments are invited. Public meeting to: Present a public comment on the Solar Energy: LIVED Sulfur to Generativity project on February 7, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. in Auditorium A. City Hall Main Floor Meeting Room This meeting is to provide the public with an opportunity to comment on the City's proposed project to produce clean sulfur dioxide (SO2), to generate natural gas, and to generate electric power. A Public hearing is being held as a condition of approval for the Solar Energy: LIVED Sulfur to Generativity project. The City of Victoria is working with the Victoria College of the Arts to create a solar thermal energy system, with the objective of using the thermal energy obtained from the Sun in combination with the electricity generated by a combined heat and power system, to produce clean sulfur dioxide(SO2) to generate natural gas, and to generate additional electricity. The site has been selected near Victoria Falls Provincial Park to allow the thermal energy to be supplied to the electrical system in the area, with an expected lifetime of several days/weeks. The project could see as much as 65 MW produced on site during the daytime (6 pm to 6 am) with the potential for a larger renewable energy capacity to be installed in the future, in addition to the electrical output being delivered through a combined heat and power system. The project includes up to 1,500 homes being provided with electricity, and up to 10 MW of thermal power is expected to be obtained across Victoria and British Columbia. During the night, the electricity generated will be sold to Victoria Hydro, with the resulting revenue to be used for a range of community initiatives. The Energy Technology Research Center (“ETC”, “the Center”) under the leadership of Director Dr. Mark Schlumberger is lead scientist in support of this project.
