The race was called on short notice. Unfortunately no one from the Yacht Club was available to talk to the media. We did hear from the crew of Captain Peter Cult and co-driver, Captain Ian Brouwer when the boat was sailing around the Cape Flattery course. For those of you not aware, the course is at the top end of the Cape Flattery track, with the boat circling around the South Cape area and around the point at the end of the track. The time spent in this time and position is used to rate crews and their boats. It is the only time and place in the world where boats are assessed in this way. As a comparison, the Cape Flattery test is known as one of the greatest times in the sport. At the 2010 race we were at a similar point in the schedule when the boat we were racing did not win because we were rated too poorly. As one crew member noted. “I would be shocked if we didn't perform terribly.” As part of the race the two-man crews had to compete under the same clock. This is designed to ensure that each ship gets the same attention for its maximum performance. During the race the clocks were set at one minute past 12 o'clock. For both sails and the windlass the clock was set to 3 minutes past 12 on the hour. For both crews it was the time for an all-round inspection. In regard to both sails both were inspected to check for cracks in the deck planks. The weather was mostly cloudy and calm. Conditions for the first run were as follows: Sails Windlass Course and sail conditions were: The boat was sailing about 0.5-1.5 hours behind forecast. Distance over course was 8,480NM. Winds were light with about 15-25 knots and 0.3 degree gusts at the head of the Cape Flattery course. The weather was calm with occasional light showers and strong northerly winds which varied from 5-15 knots at the head. During the course of the race two of the crew suffered from minor injuries, though were expected to make a full recovery. The captain has to have a physical examination from a physician approved by Sailing Australia. The boat was sailing at a speed of about 20 knots. During the course of the race the windlass was operated by someone with a very limited knowledge of how it worked and was unable to give good advice on what to do.
