The primary objective is for the University to ensure that the University is adequately protected from the chance of a possible catastrophic accident or radiological release. The University has been approved to import and export all radioactive materials, materials, plants and equipment. To ensure the safety of the University and its staff in the event of a radiological release due to any type of radioactive material, the following requirements must be adhered to. These requirements are applicable to all students, faculty and staff who are undertaking research, activities of a scientific or technological nature, use of nuclear materials, or the transfer of nuclear materials and equipment. They apply to: the possession, use and importation of all radioactive substances and equipment; the temporary storage of all materials; and the importation, exportation and/or removal of all radioactive and contaminated material. All nuclear materials, materials, plants and equipment being acquired, transferred, used or stored at the University must be under the direct supervision of University or contracted personnel; any person who has not acquired the necessary authority under these rules may bring nuclear materials or materials to use in a laboratory, or to perform any research or laboratory experiment, provided that the person does so under the direct supervision of a University employee; the construction, repair, and maintenance of radioactive plants and equipment under a University-sponsored contract; the temporary storage of radioactive objects for which the University has permission from the CNSC for temporary storage; the temporary storage of radioactive equipment for which the University has permission from the CNSC for temporary storage; the storage of radioactive materials for which the CNSC has permission from the CNSC for the temporary transportation of nuclear materials or equipment from one place to another; the temporary storage of radioactive substances for which the CNSC has permission from the CNSC for short-term storage in the event of an emergency, such as nuclear war or major natural disaster; and The storage of radioactive material for which the CNSC has permission from the CNSC in the event of an accident or catastrophe. As a consequence of these regulations, the University may not have the nuclear material it needs to meet its academic or research needs when an accident or catastrophe occurs. All University employees, including students, are bound by this regulation and all research, research and educational activities, laboratory experiments and demonstrations undertaken by employees or students must be conducted in compliance with this policy.
