22.11 Collective Agreement between Carleton University and CUP 4600 Unit 1 (September 2004 August 2006) 22.11.1 Consent to Re-start a Term. The CUP's Collective Agreement for Unit 1 (University of Ottawa) authorizes a student-appointed and supervised “teaching assistant” to be re-employed as a regular lecturer until a new appointment has been confirmed by the department. The re-employment requires written consent from the instructor. A second teaching assistant is then appointed. In this situation, faculty members of the committee appointed during this period to examine the re-employment procedure may consult with the re-employed lecturer in regard to the second employee's re-employment and may confer with the department head if necessary. If so consulted, the department head must give permission for the re-employment. Students are encouraged to consult with the Chair and/or the re-employed lecturer. If the re-employed lecturer is satisfied with the second teaching assistant's performance, it will be granted permission, but it will not be necessary for the Chair or the re-employed lecturer to consult with the department head, and no further consultation will be required if the re-employed lecturer is satisfied. 22.11.2 Change of Name of Lecturer. If the lecturer has a different name than the one provided for in the course description, the lecturer can notify the University Registrar when this information changes. 22.11.3 Medical Leave. (a) If a student has a medical condition that will prevent him or her from continuing with his or her course of study, and that condition arises after the term of teaching has begun, he/she will be required to stop teaching, and his/her leave may be terminated for medical reasons in the following circumstances. (i) the disease that makes the student unable to teach is one from which the student is on a long-term, continuous, and effective course of treatment; or (ii) the student must spend time in hospital. This treatment must provide adequate symptom control for the duration of the illness; and (iii) this illness cannot be curable.
