Arts Foundation Awards, June 2006 In addition, three MAPS Artists on Art and Technology awards were given out. It is quite unfortunate that all four of the major awards were given for “Excellence” in a rather arbitrary number of categories. Although all four have something unique to offer, we feel the best award was the MAPS Award (2005) which has a lot of merit, not just because of the uniqueness of the recipients, but also for the quality of the category itself. As we are in the process of developing new categories as well the inclusion of the categories in this one has been rather disheartening. A few thoughts to take from the whole affair: The MAPS awards are very well-thought-out and the process is easy to follow. As a result of the fact that the process is quite involved in the end we had several people who had submitted several pieces and not been nominated in the right category, so there was some concern about confusion over the selection process, especially if the winner could not be announced until the following year. At the awards' ceremony at the Buried Show, we talked about how this is usually how things were presented. At this time, we feel that the process was set up in such a way that the winner and all the other nominees will receive their prizes soon after the Awards Ceremony, if not the night before (to minimize the potential for some confusion). The MAPS award can be confusing for a number of reasons. They are presented at the Buried Show in downtown Port Hope with a set of guidelines and bylaws and guidelines for what to submit. This gives the public a much better idea of how they should submit their work. This is something that no other festival has done. The submissions can be judged, even though they are not submitted until a few days later. MAPS is very generous in recognizing what we view as the best of the “best” in the field, but they also consider a variety of criteria so that there is always something for everyone with respect to the quality of the work and so that the awards are in fact more representative. We have had many people send in work after being told that their work has already been selected and shown at other festivals. The winners, for the most part, have been able to tell us the reasons why they were not selected. And, in the case of the most prestigious prizes, they also informed us of all the wonderful works that had been submitted instead.
