The golf course is owned by DFO and leased for use by students from the HESS program to help fund our research. Students use the course to teach about fish and their habitat. In December 2007 the FRS is looking to add the use for an aquatic habitat conservation center within the Fish Habitat Conservation Program. We have not been successful in acquiring this land lease opportunity yet. During 2007 the West River Sheet Harbor Liming Project also finished work on the water quality monitoring project and in 2008 a new lab, with 3.5 tonne of dry chemical tanks is being constructed. In June 2008 the West River had its first “fish day”. The salmon were released and the fish hatcheries are waiting for the eggs to hatch. During the past year we have also been involved with the “Canadian Coast” and the HESS program. In 2007, a survey of the natural habitat around Cape Mirabeau was conducted. We are starting to work on the ecology of this area, particularly how the mussels have increased. In April 2008 we got a grant of 1,000,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to continue our research on natural resource management. The “Natural Resources Fund” is being expanded, so we will be able to offer more classes to students while continuing the HESS program work. We have been taking part in the Natural Resource Strategy Project, which involves developing a management plan for the West River in the HESS program. A new lab and a new boat for the research program is now in place and is being built. 2005 Spring The West River Sheet Harbor Liming Project has been working for many years to improve the conditions of the West River. In 2005, the Liming Project became part of the DFO research program that studies the health of our waterways in partnership with all levels of government, private stakeholders and universities. While the West River might be well known as a popular fishing hole, it is by far one of DFO's most important and interesting research projects that affects the health of our lakes, rivers and coastal environment. In Spring 2005, a new, dry chemical lab was constructed. The lab has 3.5 tons of chemical containers with a capacity of 20,000 liters. DFO has been doing chemical analysis of mussels to determine mussel abundance, species richness and age distribution that will be valuable for identifying the most vulnerable mussels and in future projects. The molt wheel was moved from the parking lot and added to the structure.
