Gent, Belgium Department of Biosciences and Microbial Genetics, Ghent University, 9052 Gent, Belgium Center of Genetic and Agricultural Systems, University of Ghent, Universities Gent, 9052 Gent Doi:10.13143/CGAS.4 E-mail Citation A series of short-term experiments were undertaken with a group of Arabidopsis seedlings (Figure S1; data in Figure 1) to monitor the development of the plant cell. In the initial stages, seedlings lacked the cell membrane and therefore had a continuous water permeability that was sufficient to allow osmotic gradients in the cell to be transmitted to the cell wall. Figure S1. Development of the Arabidopsis cells. Photographs are from the published paper (A. J. Fear et al. Plant J, Vol. 77, No. 4, February 2006, pp. 438-443). (A) Time-lapse image of the development of apicomplexation (a) from the seedling stage. (b) Time-lapse image of the apicomplexation (c) from the final development of apicomplexation from the seedling stage. (A) Time-lapse image of the apicomplexation for a mature cell. Image taken from the published paper (A. J. Fear et al. Plant J, 2010. Vol. 80, No. 1 [citing references] p. 1). (A) Time-lapse image for a cell before and after the apicomplexa formation. Image taken from the published paper (A. J. Fear et al. Plant J, 2010. Vol. 80, No. 1 [citing references] pp. 1-8). Next, to gain a better understanding of the process by which the apicomplexae were formed, we performed a series of experiments under growth conditions which simulate those of the real system (Figure 1). The first experiment was conducted to obtain a picture of the apicomplexa during its development. Apicomplexary structures were then formed by the cell membrane. To control the membrane, we used the solution containing a growth-limiting growth factor (EGGS; 50 NG/mL), which had no effect on the apicomplexation process.
