If you are interested in your PhD, you need to know about privacy and privacy research. If you have a good knowledge of cryptography, this is the right course for you, because you will have to know how different types of cryptography are used. This is a very interesting topic and one of the great challenges of our times: do we need “privacy-preserving” technologies, or should we focus more on “encryption-enhancing technologies” to better protect our privacy. For a good description, see the book: Privacy: Science and Technology by Robert H. Frank, Christopher D. Garden, and Douglas J. Engelhardt (Norton, 2001). Or, if you want to read about privacy in the abstract, see the articles (some behind a paywall, many free) in the journal Science published by RAND Corp (see). Of course, the paper by High is better written, and has more information. I will give the presentation from the paper. Classroom meetings (usually) will follow the homework and will cover topics that may not pertain to writing papers. In order to keep the course moving, we will discuss the latest research, but at the same time do not make a decision without at least having an idea of what the research topic is. The course has the following objectives: The course will introduce students to key concepts pertaining to online privacy in an introduction that is not too technical. The students' background is not very different from most students from other disciplines. It is a very interesting topic. If they have an interest to do a dissertation, the student will be able to give a good explanation of what they have learned in this course. It is important for the student to understand the basics. If the student is looking for a course that is easier, this course is not for them. If the student is interested in privacy, this is a very good course for them.
