With so many items of income, it's hard to keep track of how to fill out the required forms each year. Many investors try to prepare and file 1099s by themselves, but, as with tax law and Form 1099s, mistakes can occur and these mistakes make filing incomplete. The following information is a brief summary of some of these common, easy mistakes that investors may incur. Some form 1099 forms are specific to investment company and/or individual securities trades. Others are for tax preparation, such as forms 1099-Q and 1099-MISC. Many companies include form numbers or certain information in Form 1099 forms which should not be shared if the information is confidential or for which there is a fee involved. For additional information that applies to all forms, refer to the instructions and instructions for Form 1125 and Form 1125-A. For the tax year ending in 2001, Form 1099-Y for Individual Investors was replaced by Form 1125-A. Form 1125-A has had several changes since 2001. Most notably, the “Qualified Corporation” has been deleted in the original form. See the Forms 1125 and 1125-A for more information. In addition, for tax year 2015, Form 1099-MISC (Individual Investors) has appeared, which should be used only by persons who are tax-exempt from paying taxes. In the past, investors who were not qualified, such as non-U.S. citizens, were given the option of preparing Form 1099-MISC. This form has since been corrected. For tax year 2000, as part of a series of adjustments designed to strengthen the Internal Revenue Code, the IRS eliminated certain categories of non-exempt investors who were given the option of submitting Form 1099-MISC. For tax year 1998, the IRS eliminated a special category for persons who may be considered participants in an exchange plan and who filed an exchange plan return with their individual tax return. These persons should have the option of including a Form 1099-MISC. The new Form 1099-MISC is available for filing by U.S. taxpayers. It is only used by persons who are tax-exempt. See Form 1099-MISC for additional information. Many investors, including non-U.S. citizens, receive income from a corporation, mutual fund, or other regulated investment company.
