Space Geophysics, University of Hawaii'i at Manor. A lunar meteorite recently discovered has been characterized by the NAZI and NMM. It is the first of a series of lunar meteorites discovered over the past few decades that provides an accurate lunar address. The discovery also shows that many large, terrestrial impacts have been documented in the lunar lowlands. It has been proposed, by most researchers, that the most probable origin of the lunar meteorites was in the ocean, although this theory was not supported by the meteorite's composition. A Lunar Meteorite from the Moon A lunar meteorite recently discovered was recovered by the Team of Lunar Mineralogy from the lunar surface of New Lunar Meteorite, which was recovered during NASA's Lunar Prospector missions. The Lunar Meteorite (MM) was found as a fragment of the larger, nearly pristine Moon quake. The impact occurred on the lunar surface and generated significant material loss, which was carried to the lunar surface. Its present location on New Lunar Meteorite was designated by the New Lunar Mission's geologic mapping team. The Lunar Impact Crater (Liar) was imaged at the Marshall Space Flight Center prior to the launch of the Lunar Prospector missions in July 1999. The team of Lunar Mineralogy used a 3.7-nm LACK telescope at the Fauna KEA Observatory to collect the meteorite's X-ray spectra. The team used two of its telescopes to simultaneously image the X-ray spectra of a number of different moon rocks from the Lunar Prospector missions; this enabled the discovery of the new lunar meteorite. The new lunar meteorite consists mainly of calcium-aluminum minerals, and it provides a detailed record of its origin from the region where it was found. The new meteorite is about 3.9 to 4.1 billion years old, making it the oldest lunar meteorite ever found. Lunar meteorite from the Moon Lunar meteorites have been found before, especially those that come from terrestrial volcanic regions. The discovery of the lunar meteorite was a first with respect to terrestrial impact. However, this first impact was relatively small. The impact produced a crater, which was perhaps 2-3 km in diameter. For comparison, the impact caused by the massive asteroid on Earth, which formed the K-T boundary, may have been less than one kilometer in size and caused a 2,000-meter crater in the Moon.
