The NCAA Pre-plan Physical Exam is an evaluation of the student's physical health prior to games. If you plan to participate in NCAA events, then a pre-play physical should be scheduled to meet your school's insurance requirements. This evaluation is required on each student-athlete prior to each NCAA game. The exam is done on the school's campus to meet the NCAA requirement. The examination is a health risk assessment to determine a student-athlete's safety and well-being. Physical evaluations are performed by physicians and will be evaluated under NCAA rules and/or state statutes. The health evaluation is done following: A written survey of the student-athlete's medical history. The medical examination includes the following: (1) Physical fitness tests. (2) Medical history questions related to the student-athlete's risk levels for injury and how the student-athlete responds to prescribed medical medication. (3) Testing for current illnesses, diseases or injuries and appropriate medication. (4) Testing for current problems or injuries. (5) The student-athlete performs a graded range of motion, muscle strength and dynamic and static lung capacity tests and a dynamic balance test. The athletic trainer, the NCAA medical director and the medical director meet before each pre-plan physical to review prior exams as well as provide input on the examination. Students should not rush through the exam nor rush from the exam. The physical exam may take from 10-60 minutes. The exam fee is 20.00. Upon successful completion of the medical evaluation, the student-athlete receives a form with an athletic trainer's name written across its front and an expiration date. This form must be returned to the athletic trainer to receive the required medical certificate from the physician. The athletic trainer is also required to sign a letter confirming the student-athlete received the physical. Students may also choose to have their blood and urine samples tested prior to the NCAA Pre-plan Physical Exam. Students should note, for safety and to maximize the results of testing, that all of their samples should be collected at a time and place of their convenience. The samples are then sent to the NCAA Forensic Laboratory (ARE #3020). Students should visit the Sports Medicine Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (ARE #3030). The laboratory offers a wide range of services for athletes including blood and urine testing, physical exams, and lab analysis.
