Born in Italy as the only son of an American Air Force officer, the young Luce grew up in a family of hardworking American patriots. He received his first journalistic training as a reporter at the Chicago Daily Tribune, where he rose to become one of the nation's most successful reporters of all time, at the same time that the nation's war in Vietnam was spreading throughout Asia, creating a huge war zone. When World War II broke out, Luce joined the newly formed U.S. Information Service, known today as the “American Information Service.” From the outset, Luce's work as an investigative reporter on behalf of the I.S. gave him a wide network across various aspects of American society. But above all, his passion for journalism and the American ideal of free press was clear to all. He was instrumental in breaking open the “Black Codes,” revealing wartime atrocities in which thousands of innocent American civilians had been killed. He was a tireless crusader for civil rights. Finally, and most importantly, he was a tireless protector of human rights, regardless of party, and a leader of a generation -- more than any other editor of the newspaper -- who saw the “New Frontier” that would later become known as the New Deal. For this reason -- and for his many other efforts in the past, including the founding the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People -- Henry Luce has become the first recipient of the League of United Latin American Citizens' International Press Freedom medal. This award, given every two years, honors a journalist who has committed himself to journalism that is free and fair, and who serves the causes of justice in the Latin American region. As Luce himself wrote during an address given at LULAC's Philadelphia National Convention in 1964, “You can't fight power without getting power in your fight. You've got to win the hearts and minds of an entire people.” During the previous three decades, our Latin American region suffered brutal dictatorship after brutal dictatorship, from Brazil and Chile to Guatemala and Argentina. It was during this dangerous time that Henry Luce worked diligently to ensure not only the safety of his readers -- and the survival of a free press -- but also his own.
