I will then try, in a roundabout way, to answer the “why not?” question that keeps appearing each time someone takes a look at the case for Intelligent Design with fresh eyes. And, in case it isn't obvious, this article does not argue that there is no such thing as Intelligent Design (ID). This article simply argues that it is possible--and that it is reasonable to think there is such a thing as ID. What if there are no naturalistic forces like gravity or magnetism? What if there are non-material forces like thermodynamics? What if there are forces that operate on the universe in non-deterministic ways? What if, for example, there are forces governing the flow of information through the internet? What if, on one hand, all such forces were explained in non-material terms by the physical laws that we know today (in a manner that has remained true even as the physical laws that govern nature have changed since then)? And, on the other hand, all such forces turned out to be explained by intelligent causes operating on the physical universe that we now understand? What if, in short, everything that happens today or in the near future happens in a physical universe in which all these forces work? These are some issues you will find raised in this article. I'm giving this article this description in advance because, as you might expect, many people have read it already and found it to be interesting. One of the reasons for this is that the original version appeared in October 2003 in the Origins Archive, where this article has been archived. The Origins Archive is an online archive in which the authorship of articles is tracked from their first appearance to publication, and this article has been archived there since September 2003. The Archive does not permit postings more than three months after an article has been archived, so I didn't want to include it in this article. Why Not Intelligent Design? I like the article that I've linked to, especially as it includes a few passages that I've used as an introduction to this article. I agree with many points in that article, and I will be using this one too. But I think that the article is too short, and there's just too little I can say in my own words. After all, I'm no biologist.
