KALI has not met since it was originally formed; however, members are expected to attend regular meetings, the Governor and/or his staff are expected to interact with and learn from members, and KALI continues to work on issues related to students in Kentucky and interns worldwide. (Page 1726) Governor's Statement on the International Year of Internships 2 The International Year of Internships is a collaborative effort between the governments of the United States and Canada aimed at boosting the education of young people around the globe and making the world a better place to live for the generations following. This year, Internships United, a U.S.-Canada nonprofit organization, is taking the lead in organizing internship programs in the United States. This year the focus will be to strengthen internships as an important part of an educational foundation that can benefit students in Kentucky, and improve the quality and value of internships in the state of Kentucky. Internships United has been created by a group of organizations in the field of social entrepreneurship. The goal of the organization is to promote a culture of internships and to increase the number of internships available to students around the country and around the world. Internships United is a non-political and non-business-like organization. We are not trying to be involved in politics, and it would be hard for us to participate in an election. We are not doing this simply to have fun at the cost of the public schools, or to have the public schools spend money. In many cases these programs are needed because of the lack of training in the field. Therefore, we think a public education on internships is a very good thing. We want to work for a way that this can be funded in the public education, with many people involved, and with a strong group in favor of the program being developed. The Governor and his cabinet will be conducting a special meeting in the Executive Tower Room on June 25, 2008, to begin the process of selecting a state agency or department to carry out the efforts for Internships United. They will conduct the same process for Kentucky colleges, universities, and other entities which are interested in being a part of Internships United. The President and Vice President will attend as observers to the process and provide their expertise and support.
