In order to support the LTE-A Project a range of new 3GPP-drafting documents have been completed during the 6 years since the LTE specification was defined. The LTE-A specification is expected to be completed by Q1 2012, and be available in LTE-A based devices starting in Q1 2013. In addition, an International Certification Program (ICP) group has completed certification of specifications required for development of LTE-A-based devices. The 3GPP is working in conjunction with the ICP to finalize certification of the ICP-drafting documents, and has also established an initial working group for LTE-A requirements. In addition, the ITU is preparing a draft of the ICP standards for LTE-Advanced, and it is expected to be completed by July 2011. All this is subject of an expected LTE-A certification process by the end of 2011 or early 2012. Once completed, LTE-A devices must meet the minimum LTE-A standards set out by the ICP and LTE-A-enabled mobile networks. While LTE, the first generation of LTE, was designed on an 800MHz base band, LTE-A will require a more sophisticated radio architecture, enabling more spectrum. The first applications for this new radio architecture will be for the latest generation (4G) mobile broadband networks (800MHz and 1900MHz). LTE-A is also being designed in a wide variety of smaller bands, including 700MHz (the 4G standard) and 600MHz (5G). Some enhancements for LTE-A will include: (1) support for a full 800MHz wideband, (2) expanded system capabilities, enabling the new radio system to support new LTE-A capabilities, including support for full spectrum use, multiple carriers and support of various application standards. LTE-A also includes advanced packet and data coding, a new wireless radio core, improved system architecture and improved radio antenna design. These enhancements will benefit LTE-A in a number of ways: 1) Improved LTE-A capabilities for larger coverage areas and for new service models such as 4G, 5G, VoLTE, IoT and Wi-Fi hotspots. LTE-A provides a high capacity, mobile broadband service and the new radio architecture enables the service to scale up to meet the demand. 2) Advanced radio technology also enables the deployment of 5G, and will enable further innovations in next generation mobile broadband networks.
