We had checked out, gone through the overnight security, and would now make our departure around 20:00. The air was still cool with a light breeze and the temperature dropped below freezing that evening and in the morning was well below 0 °F. It was still very early in the morning and as we exited the security area in order to start our pre-flight preparations, we were greeted by two police helicopters overhead. This was our signal to head out of the security area and to follow our RV. Soon our RV was parked in the Grand Canyon just north of the Canyon Campground. This made the trip safer from the possibility of having your vehicle stolen, yet this same safety came with the added challenge of more people having to get off the road to get to the site. There were three options: 1. The Ranchers 2. Ranchero-style road crossing on a dirt trail that would take us to the bottom of the canyon. 3. The steep route up the canyon's north side that would take us all the way through the Grand Canyon to just above the water for a much tougher ascent. We chose No. 3 which allowed us to leave the main canyon to enjoy the scenery to our advantage. After a 20 - 30-minute drive down the canyon to the north and back, we finally took on the steep ascent. It was hard on all of us, our legs were sore, but what a view. We had gotten many photos from every angle during the day, but there still were many more that would never see the light of full day. Although the views were more extensive, the water could be quite shallow which would make it difficult to take photos. We had to rely on our binoculars for the night and there could be some trouble if a bear got too close to the RV. The morning brought with it a light breeze but with the day's heat still beating down, we chose to wait it out instead of continuing through the canyon to the top. We stayed low under a waterfall and took some photographs of the beautiful scenery. About an hour later the ranger would come to check on us, and then we would make our way back to the base of the canyon. It had been about a day of adventure.
