Rose Theater opened its new exhibition from January 1st to April 30th, with the actors and crew taking three months to prepare for the show and a new stage for it. The new gallery will allow a wider range of public engagement into the theater's history. The exhibition gives more insight than has been seen before, with an extended interview with Tony winner William Greenroom, a reconstruction of the original Globe and Globe performance, a recreation with newly found objects, and even a recreation of the stage itself. The exhibition will feature new photographs from the original exhibit including many never before seen, and a reconstruction of the original set and set pieces. The opening of this show, and the opening on May 4th and 5th of a new one, will be timed for the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Rose Theater. There will also be a special screening of the play, which was produced by the Globe in its heyday.
Paintings and photographs from the late seventies will be on show as well. The catalog is full of good photographs which provide interesting insight into the history of the Rose.
A great deal of effort over the last year has been made to restore many of the theater facades. Most of the facades can be seen from the bridge on the way into Soho. The ones which cannot be seen are a lot further back which is the old Theater Royal and the Ritzy Royal. The restoration of the facades will lead towards a new design for the Rose Theater which is not to date but is based on the traditional building styles of the time. The most important change has been the extension of the north facade down from the entrance which opens onto the street to the rear of the building where the staircase is placed below the arch of the Rose. This change, which can be seen from the bridge, has also made the facade of the building taller than before.
There has been considerable publicity on the restoration of the Rose Theater. The Globe's website has full details of the restoration and there is a good article in the Telegraph about the planning and development of the theater, and it's restoration.
