Department of Materials & Manufacturing, UNDP-Fellowship F r Germany. Table of Contents BACKGROUND: There is little or no information on how energy is used for heating and other processes in the German light industry: the use of fossil fuels seems to be more widespread than solar, wind, or other sources of energy that can be used to produce electrical power. The goal of this research is to evaluate the potential effectiveness of the use of solar and wind energy for the heating and other processes in the light industry, to determine appropriate conditions for the generation of electrical power at the desired level of power input (in kWh/Map) for industrial users and to provide information on the economic viability of the potential of solar and wind energy. The project does NOT consider costs or electricity distribution networks. DESIGN: Solar and wind energy systems, together with other sources of non-fossil fuel power generation, will be tested with different loads during the summer and winter seasons. These tests will be conducted in a variety of locations around the country. POTENTIAL IMPACT: A number of conclusions are expected to emerge from the investigation. The main conclusions that can be drawn are summarized in the following points: 1. The potential economic impact of solar and wind power for the heating and other processes in the light industry at the desired level of electricity input at the desired level of demand (in kWh/Map) remains to be investigated. Currently, little attention has been paid to the impact of photovoltaic technology and to the potential for renewable power. The study will provide evidence to support the realization of solar power systems at the desired level of electricity input in the German light industry. 2. In considering the cost of renewable energy power generation, consideration should be given to the fact that many factors are changing as renewable energy systems mature and become integrated into the energy mix. It may be more advantageous to implement photovoltaic power plants in areas where such plants would compete favorably against fossil fuel power plants of the same class, in particular in areas with relatively high electricity demand. There also exist areas where solar PV power systems may be cost competitive against other sources of electrical power.
