These two classes of verbs are not necessarily the same, though they are often grouped together. In addition, the UH is claimed to be more or less invariable with verbs, even within the same language. The aim of this paper is to examine the syntactic basis of the UH with respect to its syntactic and lexical correlates in English, Japanese and French and see whether any evidence for their universality can be demonstrated with some degree of certainty. In this paper, the following four questions are addressed, as will also emerge from the analysis of the four languages. Is the UH ungrammatical? (a) Is it a genuine feature of these languages? (b) Does it correspond to something innate in the languages that have it? © How much do the characteristics of these languages (and of the cultures that speak them) affect these characteristics? (d) What are the consequences of such features? The three first questions are addressed separately. I believe that answering them can offer considerable insight into the nature of the UH itself, for as is known, languages may often be thought of as having a 'non-grammatical' morphology where no grammatical features exist. I shall proceed to examine the first of the three questions. Is the UH a genuine feature of Japanese, English and French? As already mentioned, the UH is assumed to be an intrinsic feature of these languages. As to the second question, I think that the answers to this question need little comment, since they can be found in Chomsky's (1977) article and his book in general. The third question is more difficult. To what extent do linguists like M.A.N.L.C. subscribe to the UH? To begin with a clear understanding of this question becomes necessary to understand why the linguistic data have been so resistant to falsification. In our attempt to answer this problem, we also have to give the linguists of the language concerned the benefit of the doubt in their research, since much of the data were collected in a context of linguistic theory. The UH is not a 'scientific dogma' as is often represented. Rather, it is a phenomenon that is accepted by the vast majority of linguists (e.g. see: Around & Esperanza 1992, p. 5). As mentioned (Pilgrim 1985) the existence of the UH is a subject of considerable debate.
