CSU, S. Poor, T. Wang, H. EU Abstract. The United States has maintained an extensive and highly productive international network of cartographic coordinate services which have provided a wide range of geographic information for the global community. The objective of this paper is to summarize the efforts of a Working Group, headed by a representative from each member country, to provide a “Roadmap to a better coordinate” which aims to facilitate further development of international cartographic resources. The goal is to ensure that resources developed by geologists and/or engineers working for government agencies are aligned to and in alignment with standard international standards, including the World Geodetic System and the IAU Geodetic Reference System. The new report was prepared by Randolph L. Kirk and by Brent A. Archival, and includes comments by H. CSU and S. Poor. The report is presented in chronological order along with some summary information of work going on. The authors would like to thank the many contributors to this project for their help and input. In addition: The USGS coordinates system is currently evolving, having reached an advanced stage, with a single unified coordinate space, the U.S. Geographic Names Area (1:24,000) and the Uniform Global Positioning System of 1:44,400. Although no current or final adoption policy is published for either system, the U.S. Geological Survey is currently developing a proposal for new standards and a process to develop appropriate new standards as needed. Further information can be found in the Department of State's USGS Guide for Geoprocessors, Geodatabase, or the USGS Cartographic Data Base. Further details of these efforts are in.
