Apocalypticism arose in the early stages of Islam and in the second century in Judea and Galilee. The most famous apocalyptic work of antiquity is the writings of Clement of Alexandria, who was born in the fourth century CE. While this work was later lost, he left one interesting unfinished manuscript which survives in the form of a letter on the life of Messiah found in the Apocryphal of the New Testament. This work, The First Apology of Christ, contains a discourse in allegorical language on the coming of the Messiah. The language is quite obscure and cryptic, but it is clear as to what kind of work it is. For the most part it refers to future events of which Clement's writings provide no particulars. However, he does mention the persecution of the Jews known as the Second Temple period, the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, and the resurrection. The book ends with a prediction of the coming of the Savior. In short, it would seem that Clement's Apocryphal contains a prophetic account, although without details of the predicted events. His work, however, was lost in the mid-fourteenth century. Another important apocalypticism of that period was that of Grenades (died c. 180). Grenades makes mention of the fact that he had translated some work of Clement, and also appears to have used some terminology in his own work. He speaks of the coming of the Messiah, and makes reference to the first-century Roman persecuting of the Jews called the persecution by Antony and Cleopatra. He is also concerned with the persecution the Christians suffered under the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. It may be mentioned that the work by Clement was already lost by the time that Grenades wrote. The Jewish writer Phil (in the second century) also speaks of the coming of the Messiah, but with a very different meaning. Phil is a great historian and scientist. He was born in the eighth century in Syria, and wrote about a whole variety of things. But he is most remembered for his book against Christianity. He discusses many of the same issues that we have discussed, and even repeats some information contained in the Apocryphal of the New Testament. Phil is concerned with the development of Judaism and the development of their apocalyptic expectations. He seems to see the end in sight, as well as an end of the world in sight. This was probably the thinking of the Jewish religious leaders of the first century.
