If you choose to contest a claim with DPS, you must contact troopers at their local station in order to receive an apology from DPS. “This is a very encouraging step,” said McElroy. “We are now able to keep these claims and investigations completely focused on the driver. It also means that DPS is working with the driver to make sure that they are driving safely and legally to resolve any issues related to claims.” At the end of the 30-day window, DPS is notified by the phone system if no apology claim is received. If a written apology is submitted, DPS will notify the driver of the new automated system and offer to meet with them in person if requested. In addition to verifying their identity and insurance coverage, DPS does this by verifying the time and place of the crash in question. DPS does not use the driver's personal GPS. DPS says the new system will be a tremendous asset to the state, which collects approximately 40 per vehicle damage claim in Alabama. “We really do want to help to keep our traffic system in good hands,” said McElroy. “People should contact DPS to file a claim before driving and to file an apology.
